Ex Machina

Alex Garland·108 min

Alex Garland's first film as director. A young programmer wins a week at his reclusive billionaire boss's estate, where the real job turns out to be evaluating Ava, an AI with a transparent body and a very human face. The film is mostly three people in a glass house, talking, and it stays tense the whole way through because everyone is testing everyone else. The question is never just whether Ava is conscious. It is whether she is manipulating the man sent to judge her, and whether telling the difference is even possible. The ending is cold and exactly right.
