Östlund builds his satire in three movements, each more merciless than the last, watching beauty and wealth and power trade places until no one is left with the moral high ground. The centerpiece — a captain's dinner during a storm — is among the most grotesque comic set-pieces in recent cinema, and it earns every second of its excess. The film is cruel, and knows it, and aims its cruelty with precision at the systems that arrange us into those who serve and those who are served. It is funny the way a slap is funny.
