Yusuke is a rude, brawling fourteen-year-old who dies on the spot when he throws himself in front of a car to save a kid. The afterlife was not expecting him, so he is offered a deal: pass some trials and get his life back as a Spirit Detective, hunting demons that cross into the human world. What begins as a monster-of-the-week show grows into one of the templates the modern fighting anime is built on, especially once it settles into long tournament arcs where opponents get backstories and power becomes a kind of conversation. It is funny, fast, and warmer than its tough-guy hero lets on.
