Happiness

Shuzo Oshimi·10 volumes

A quiet, bullied middle-schooler named Makoto is attacked one night by a pale girl who drinks his blood and tells him he can either die or become like her. He chooses to live, and the rest is about what that choice costs. Oshimi treats vampirism less as horror and more as puberty taken to its worst conclusion: the body changing against your will, hunger you cannot explain, the fear that the new you will hurt the people you love. It is slow and patient, built on small humiliations and the dread of being found out. The supernatural is real here, but the real subject is shame.
