Himizu ran in Weekly Young Magazine from 2001 to 2002, four volumes. The boy at the center, Sumida, has one wish: to grow up plain and unremarkable, to run the family boat-rental shop and bother no one. His parents, his neighbors, and a string of bad luck make even that small life impossible. Furuya tracks his decline step by step until the gap between what Sumida wanted and what he becomes is total. The art is rough and direct, no polish, which suits a story about a kid being ground down. Tsukamoto adapted it into a 2011 film. The manga is not officially available in English.
