You are Geralt, a paid monster hunter searching for a young woman he raised, while an army of ghostly riders hunts her too. The big draw is the writing. Side quests here have the weight most games save for their main story: a haunted well, a missing husband, a baron whose family fell apart. Choices rarely split into good and evil. You pick between two bad outcomes and live with what you did not foresee. The world is huge and detailed, full of swamp villages and broken castles, and it mostly lets you wander at your own pace.
