Death Note

Tsugumi Ohba / Takeshi Obata·12 volumes

Death Note ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2006, twelve volumes. Light Yagami, a top student bored with everything, picks up a notebook dropped by a death god: write a person's name while picturing their face, and they die. He starts killing criminals to build a world he will rule as judge, and a hidden genius detective known only as L sets out to catch him. The whole series is two clever people trying to out-think each other, mostly through deduction rather than violence. Ohba writes the plot, Obata draws it in sleek, detailed lines. VIZ Media publishes it in English.
