The World Is Mine

Hideki Arai·14 volumes

Mon and Toshi are two aimless young men who start planting bombs and drive north through Japan leaving wreckage behind them, and somewhere along the way they become folk villains the whole country watches. At the same time a creature called Higumadon, a bear the size of a dinosaur, crosses onto the main island and begins walking, flattening towns as it goes. Arai cuts between the killers, the beast, a famous hunter, and a journalist, and uses all of it to ask what people are really like when order breaks. It is long, ugly, and genuinely disturbing, and it has never been officially translated into English. It is a real test of a reader.
