Wham! were two school friends from the north London suburbs, marketed as a teen act, which hid the fact that George Michael was writing, arranging, and producing everything himself. Make It Big did what the title ordered: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Careless Whisper, and Everything She Wants all reached number one in America, and the album topped the chart on both sides of the Atlantic. He and Andrew Ridgeley had written Careless Whisper years earlier, as teenagers, on the bus to Michael's job as a cinema usher.
