Rael is a teenage graffiti writer in Manhattan who gets swallowed by a wall in Times Square and spends two records moving through an underworld of cocoons, carpet crawlers, and a colony of deformed men. Peter Gabriel insisted on writing the entire story himself while the rest of Genesis wrote the music, and the split widened until he left the band the following year. The result is a double concept album that should collapse under its own plot and somehow never does.
