Alice in Chains came home from a year of touring Dirt to find their landlord had emptied their rental house. With nowhere to live, they moved into London Bridge Studio in Seattle and wrote and recorded this in about a week, with nothing prepared in advance. It is the gentlest thing the band ever made: acoustic guitars, real strings, even a harmonica, and Layne Staley singing softer than anyone thought he could. It became the first EP in history to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.
