

By 1983 Bowie had spent a decade as a cult artist with hits. He wanted the whole audience, so he hired Nile Rodgers of Chic to produce, and they cut the album at the Power Station in New York in seventeen days. The lead guitar went to Stevie Ray Vaughan, a Texas blues player Bowie had seen at the Montreux festival, whose own debut album was still months away. Three singles went top twenty almost everywhere: the title track, China Girl, and Modern Love. It became the biggest seller of his life.
