The Pixies recorded their third album in Los Angeles with producer Gil Norton, and Black Francis wrote every song himself, often finishing lyrics in the studio right before singing them. The obsessions changed: out went scripture and gore, in came surf rock, science fiction, and the desert. It opens with Cecilia Ann, an instrumental cover of a sixties surf band called The Surftones, which sets the mood before anyone sings a word.
