Kevin Parker recorded his first album in a beach shack on a remote stretch of the Western Australian coast, alone, surrounded by nothing but the ocean and his tape machine. It came out in 2010 sounding like it had been buried since 1969: fuzzy guitars, Lennon-style vocals soaked in echo, drums that swing like a real sixties band. The trick was that none of it was nostalgia for show. Parker just loved that sound and rebuilt it from scratch, by himself, which is why it feels lived in rather than copied.
