Vespertine

Björk·55 min · 12 tracks

After two restless albums Björk made the opposite kind of record: small, close, made of sounds you can barely place. The beats are built from shuffled cards, cracking ice, and footsteps in snow, layered so they hold together only at low volume. She wanted music that would survive being passed around on early file-sharing sites, so she designed it for headphones and laptop speakers. A choir from Greenland, a celesta, and a harp fill in around her voice. The whole thing feels like being let into a private room.
