2001: A Space Odyssey

Stanley Kubrick·149 min

Stanley Kubrick's film moves from prehistoric apes finding a black monolith to a spacecraft bound for Jupiter, where the onboard computer HAL begins making its own decisions. Long stretches have no dialogue at all. Kubrick trusts images, classical music, and silence to carry meaning, and the special effects still look convincing decades later because they were built and shot, not faked. The final act drops plot entirely for a sequence of pure light and time. It is a film that wants to be experienced more than understood, and it rewards giving it your full attention.
