Rakka is born from a cocoon into a town surrounded by a wall no one may cross. She and the others, the Haibane, have ash-colored wings and dim halos and no memory of who they were. From Yoshitoshi ABe's designs, Radix builds a gentle, low-key fable about guilt, forgiveness, and learning to leave. There is no villain and almost no plot in the usual sense. The series asks what you do with a past you cannot recover, and it answers with a kindness that never feels cheap.
