Ashitaka takes a demon's curse to the arm and rides west to find its cause. He arrives at a fight with no clean side: Lady Eboshi's gun town clears the mountain for ore and gives shelter to lepers and former brothels, while the wolf-raised girl San and the old gods of the forest try to kill her for it. Miyazaki refuses to pick a villain. The film has real violence in it, severed arms and a decapitated god, and it does not flinch. The animation gives the forest weight, every tree and pool drawn like it matters more than the people.
